Discover Teletubbies Hill: Nature As Far As the Eye Can See
Teletubbies Hill is known for its peaceful atmosphere and stunning panoramic views. Unlike many other attractions in Nusa Penida, there’s no beach or ocean here — just vast, undisturbed nature.
The landscape features large, round hills made of limestone, topped with a thin layer of grass. Depending on the season, the hills may appear lush and green or turn golden like straw.
You’ll also find patches of farmland, a few scattered trees, and the occasional farmer tending the land.
Breathe deeply and take in the crisp mountain air. On a clear day, you might even spot Mount Rinjani on the island of Lombok in the distance — Indonesia’s second-highest volcano at 3,726 meters.
Why Visit Teletubbies Hill?
Teletubbies Hill is a popular trekking spot in Nusa Penida. Once you arrive, put on a good pair of walking shoes and explore the rolling hills on foot. The quietness and greenery make for a calming, almost meditative experience.
The views from the hilltops are breathtaking, and it’s easy to spend an hour or two just soaking it all in. For those up for an adventure, a challenging hike can take you all the way to Suwehan Beach — budget around 3 hours round-trip (excluding breaks).
Why Is It Called “Teletubbies Hill”?
The original name of this area was Gamal Hills, named after the Gamal tree, which was widely planted to feed local livestock.
Later, when the area became more visited, tourists started calling it “Teletubbies Hill” because it reminded them of the rolling green hills in the late-90s children’s TV show Teletubbies. The name stuck — and today, it’s locally known as Bukit Teletubbies.
When to Visit Teletubbies Hill?
- Best time of day: Morning. It gets hot quickly and there’s little shade in the area.
- Best time of year: From February to April, right after the rainy season. That’s when the hills are at their greenest and most photogenic.
In contrast, during the dry season, the hills turn yellow and dry — still scenic, but not the lush green many visitors come for.
How to Get to Teletubbies Hill
As with most places in Nusa Penida, the best way to get around is by renting a scooter.
There are:
- No entrance fees
- No parking charges
Just follow the ridge road until you find a good spot to pull over and explore. You’re free to park anywhere along the road.
Pro tip: While you’re in the area, don’t miss a visit to the Tanglad Weaving Village nearby for a taste of local culture.
